Towards a Resilient Food System: Partnerships with Conservation Organizations

June 7, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

WHEN: Tues., June 7th (10:00am-2:00pm)
WHERE: Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation HQ (14 Maple Ave, Morristown NJ)
COST: Free! (lunch included)

Close to 40% of the agricultural lands in New Jersey are farmed by someone other than the landowner. Conservation organizations can play a role in linking new and existing farmers to underutilized farmlands. The American Farmland Trust has partnered with land trusts in NY’s Hudson Valley to help farmers gain access to land, including preserved lands. This workshop will gauge interest in bringing a similar program to New Jersey. In addition, we’ll explore how the River Friendly Farms program can promote sustainable farming practices. A panel of speakers will cover three exciting topics:

Growing Farmers’ Access to Land
(David Haight, American Farmland Trust)
The FarmLink Program in the Hudson Valley
Growing Farmers
(Katie Munning, CSG at Genesis Farm)
Intern program for developing new farmers
Promoting Sustainable Farms
(Marcus Gray, North Jersey RC&D)
River Friendly Farm Certification Program
Thanks to the Foodshed Alliance, the Ridge and Valley Conservancy, and the NJ Land Trust Network for coordinating this workshop! Questions? Contact Laura Szwak (NJCF) at laura@njconservation.org.
